Anyone in our community can experience mental and behavioral health problems, regardless of income, race or social status. When those around us are suffering, it can affect families, worklife, healthcare operations, and our economy. And unfortunately, our Spartanburg community is in crisis.
Youth, new parents, and adults are suffering with persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, which impacts well being, productivity, and suicide rates.
Opioid overdoses and deaths in the region are at record highs.
Emergency rooms see 5000+ patients whose issues could have been prevented with mental or behavioral health care.
Vulnerable people (such as those with addiction disorders or facing homelessness) have barriers to accessing care.
Spartanburg’s healthcare providers, nonprofits, municipalities and philanthropists came together to address this problem head on and improve our community’s health. VITAL Spartanburg is the new community action plan to address Spartanburg’s mental health crisis through a collaborative, public health approach focused on prevention, treatment and cross-sector, data informed approaches. Together, we will identify and fix gaps in care, raise awareness about the importance of mental health care, and offer help to vulnerable residents.
VITAL Spartanburg will create new, innovative programs, but will also expand on successful work already underway throughout the community.
